Yesterday we didn't do very much but recouperate from the trip. We watched Cool Hand Luke, which was very good but I don't recommend it to you because it was very slow. Neuman was gorgeous and very good in it though. We had bridge last night at Faye's but I don't feel like doing a bridge report right now. Good luck GG and Bumpa on your flight to Florida tomorrow.

Correction

"on" not "no"

swollen throat and fever of 99.9--yes, tonsilitis again, or still, either one. at least there's no pain this time. i wondered why i was so tired after just one day of running around last week--guess there's my answer. i'm no a powerful antibiotic this time, bacteria's got nuthin on me.

i spent most of the weekend laying on the couch being tired. that's my mantra for the last 2 weeks "i'm tired." max is tired too after having the kids to play with and r and j to love for the last week. he has been sleeping a LOT--and demanding more attention than usual. he's eaten two bulbs off my tree and now my bottom lights don't work--bastard. he just crunches the glass like popcorn--i should call him "Shredder".

i've been working from home the last two days. i feel like i'm not terribly productive here, but being sick has something to do with that i think.

i'd like to take this blogportunity to thank mila for turkey etc. i had a few excellent thanksgiving sandwiches because of her.

it was GREAT to have the fam here. i missed my children. i'll be glad to be home for christmas..what kind of pie do i want.....

I'm going to Florida. That's where I'll be.

I pretty much did nothing yesterday. Oh sure I did a load of laundry or something and that's it. JK and I watched "Hang Em High" and we loved it. I stayed up and watched 2.5 men, of course, and about 3/4 of the football game. Friggin Colts. Oh well, Gram will be happy about that anyway.

Today more of the same, hopefully with a bit more ambition thrown in as I'm packing.

Oh forget that. I won't be home will I.

Thanks for the update Snoop. I'm proposing poker Saturday night. Anyone want to come?

Is anyone else having recent trouble with the format of the blog? It's doing that thing where all the posts are below the links and bdays. It must be an I.E thing maybe.

Friday we went to breakfast with Mila, Todd, and her mother and step father. We went to a really cool diner. AFter that, Jen gave JK and I the day off. She took the kids and we did more sightseeing. We went to Mt. Vernon to visit Mr. Washington's place. We toured the house and grounds and really enjoyed it. We were glad the kids weren't with us because it was a long cold wait to get into the house. What a beautiful view of the Potomac though. After that we went into old town Alexandria and walked around. Then we had coffee and pastry at the famous "Bread and Chocolate". It truly lived up to it's reputation.

We then met Todd and Dawn for wine and cheese and a nice visit at their place. We stayed for quite a while, chatted and played guitar. Todd has graciously lent me a mandolin to play with.

We went back to Jen's and got mostly packed up to leave.

Saturday morning we took off for Maine. We took an alternate route that you would never take if time was your main concern. We only got slightly lost, but I can't even remember where. We made it to Portsmouth last night and got home around 1:00 today.

So we went to the UVA campus after that, just to give them a Hokie gobble on the mall. I'll admit the center of campus is beautiful, but that's all I'll give em. So we were only there two seconds, then we left for Jen's. We made it with very few problems.

Tuesday night, I don't remember what we did. OH yeah, we went to red robin and had very good burgers. Hey Jen, you must have 12,000 pounds of leftovers in your fridge. I forgot about the red robin remnants.

Wednesday it was a nice day, if a bit chilly, so we went to the zoo. We had a very good time. I loved the gorilla's and the elephant. We also went to the Vietnam and Lincoln memorials. We were all quite thrilled at all of these attractions.

Wednesday night we had pizza hut which was pretty good. We then went home and made pumpkin pie. Then we watched Napoleon Dynamite, which we loved.

Thursday we went into DC again. This time we went to the American Indian museum first. We got a parking space RIGHT in front of the museum. Note to tourists: Do you want to go see the sites in DC? Go Thanksgiving week, no lines, no waiting and virtually no traffic to deal with.

I think we all concur that, while the American Indian Museum BUILDING, is VERY impressive, the museum exhibits are less so. We were less than impressed. The displays were lackluster and they have very few actual artifacts on display. The Maine indians are not really represented at all, due to their lack of casino income apparently.

After that we had a hot dog on the street then went to the American History Museum, where we spent a lot of time. I saw Julia's kitchen, and, of course, it made me cry. Isaiah enjoyed the president's exhibit and the super colliding super conductor, or whatever it's called. Maddy enjoyed the race car simulation. After that we took a VERY quick trip over to the natural history museum to see the dino's.

Then we went home to make thanksgiving dinner. I had a lot of fun cooking with Jen. We drank wine, had a very good dinner, watched Charlie Brown, had pie and finshed off the night with a replay of ND. We didn't watch the whole thing though as we were all exhausted.

Hmm, I can't really remember what we did Sunday night. It must have involved food and wine, but it's escaping me at the moment.

Monday we got up and maddy and I explored Blacksburg for a little while. We walked around in the rain and had a hot chocolate. Then we all went to see Curse of the Were Rabbit which we enjoyed thoroughly. We had a great lunch, then another walk, and I did some shopping. We had dinner at home. JK and JB went to see the Hokie's play basketball. They won handily. We got up Tuesday morning and had coffee with the Bush's and then left town.

We took a beautiful drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains straight through to Charlottesville, VA. The kids were impressed at being high up in the mountains. We stopped several times along the way to enjoy the view. It was very cold, so we couldn't take as much time outside as we may have liked.

In Charlottesville, we took the tour of Monticello and walked the grounds. The kids took it very well and even pretended to be interested at parts. Despite trying, I don't have any more respect for Jefferson than I did previously. Sorry, all you fans. As I've argued previously, he was a great writer and thinker, but he was a coward and a hypocrite. I stand by that arguement so far.

my winter vacation

Ok, we had a friday FROM HELL before we left. EVERYTHING went wrong, still we made it to Portland and to Ricettta's for pizza. It was VERY good, despite our terrible day. Thanks to Amy for letting us spend the night ins So. Berwick. We got up early saturday and drove and drove and drove straight through to Blacksburg. The children were perfect in the car.

Sunday we got up and had an excellent breakfast with our friends, the Bush's. Then we went for a nice long walk around the Virginia Tech Campus. We saw the new football and basketball stadiums and the solar house that the architecture school built. The kids thought the solar house was cool.

I STILL KNOW IT JENN!!!

well, it's RK NOT Jen. We had a really lovely time in blacksburg and now we're at Jen's. More latah.

Poor snoop! that car has been more trouble than worth most of its life. i bet uncle will come and get you for thanksgiving. give him a chance to smoke for an hour.

i haven't heard from the kilbys yet. i think i shall call them.

across the road from my house right now are two white vans pulled over by two cops, with about a dozen mexican guys on their knees, looking at the ground--did they just get off their shift at wal-mart?

http://www.greenmountaincoffee.com/GMCRContent/HTMLFiles/mcdonalds.html

could this mean that mcdonald's coffee in your region will be drinkable at last?

Friday, November 18, 2005

Well, tickets, money, passports, I guess we're all ready to go. I printed the kids their own map so they can guess for themselves how many more miles it is.

Isaiah is looking for money that he might be willing to spend rather than save (good luck with that kid). He has this idea that money is collectable. Whatever, well, maybe we'll have our first family millionaire.

Anyway, Tonight we'll be at amy's and tomorrow at some point in VA. Feel free to call my cell tomorrow to check on our progress. Don't be surprised if you can't get us in the Poconos though, sometimes the reception is terrible there.

I am anticipating we'll be back a week from tomorrow. I'm sure I won't be able to blog you until then, right.

Isaiah wants to go to the white house. I tried to explain to him you can't just walk in to the white house. He doesn't quite understand, but hopefully he'lll think a postcard is the next best thing.

YOU learn interesting things from netflix!

One of the movies rented more in Bangor MAINE than other areas was called 'men's mix: a collection of gay men's shorts". i put it in my q--i wonder if they'll be boxer or boxer-brief.......

thanks unk!!!

www.festivusbook.com

no thanks, i think artificial and cheesy goes better with the neighborhood.

This weekend i'm going out to buy a 5' fake christmas tree with lots of blinkie colored lights. i'm going to put it up the day after thanksgiving and keep it up through new years--maybe even my birthday. who's going to stop me, i ask you?

Wednesday, November 16, 2005

well i've been having a lovely day. of course it started with homemade strawberry ruhbarb jam on a bagel--how can any day be bad with a start like that. homemade jam is quite the novelty in these parts, trust me. no one can believe i don't own any store-bought jam yet have 3 jars in my fridge. strawberry ruhbarb is my favorite right now, followed closely by blueberry.

other than that, just a regular old work day. i am anxiously awaiting my family's visit next week--i already know i'm going to cry when i see the kids, so brace jk for it now.

Blog Review:

Piano Recital -
Madeline was beautiful and charming and played wonderfully. However, i neglected to take my camera with me. Sorry folks.

Adventures in eating:
I haven't made the kids eat anything "disgusting" this week. I'm basically trying to empty out my fridge of all leftovers, so they've been able to eat whatever they want to. They do NOT like Chocolate Bavarian cream however. Ridiculous.

!

I still have it, I'll leave it for you so you can watch it this weekend, you can mail it back for me.

In honor of my favorite movie of the week I give you...."THE BIG LEBOWSKI RANDOM QUOTE GENERATOR"!!!!

I know how thrilled you are believe me.

"Walter, I love you, but sooner or later, you're gonna have to face the fact that you're a goddamned moron."

i am apparently hateful and don't like anyone or anything.

why do you all put up with me?

RK's movie review:

The Big Liebowski
A Coen Bros. film, starring Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Turturro, Buscemi, the usual cast of characters for the Coens, you know em.

Anyway, despited Jen's hatred, JK and I LOVED this movie. Though I can't explain why. Perhaps it's the familiar faces and the ignorant story line. Perhaps it's the philosophy of the entire film. It just seems so homey and reasonable to me for some reason. I got that same "settled" feeling that I always get watching P & P. Perhaps it's that Jeff Bridges had mannerisms similar to Uncle Peter's that made me love the character so much. No offense meant unk. I hope you dont take it that way. Jeff Bridges is very affable, you have to admit. Anyway, I'm dying to see it again, and hopefully I will after bridge tonight.

Movie Review II

Breakfast at Tiffany's
starring you know them all so I don't have to type it.

I'm very even about this movie. I liked nor disliked it. I finished it, which says something. Audrey was beautiful of course and George Peppard was quite "boy next door" handsome, though I never had any boys next doors that looked so good. Anyway, if you haven't seen it, you probably should, and did you ever get the impression that we're a lot more staid as a society than we were in the early 60's? Oh yes, a GIANT thumbs DOWN to Mickey Rooney and who ever conceived and wrote his OBSCENE depiction of the Japanese landlord. You should be ashamed of yourself.

i don't even know where to start with the disgustingness of your blogs this AM. i would rather drink a 6pack of salmon soda than sit through a movie starring martin short. i think he's funny--but not a main character.

adventures in tonsilitis

so i walk into work today, feeling fine, and my boss takes one look at me (when she rolls in 40 minutes after me)..."you look so tired!" thanks a lot, lady.

well at about 10:30 i start to feel a tickle in my throat and by 2 i am clammy, hot, cold, sore throated, and suffer from general malaise. i left work at 3pm to come home. now i'm watching paula deen. max is happy to have me home and he looks like he wants a nap so i think we'll go have one. after i put on some pajamas.

note to a and r: somewhere in amy's house are my fur lined leather slippers. i am going to need them if i'm going to be sick all winter--can someone (amy) find them so that someone (rachael) can bring them down to me next week? thanks.

Sunday, November 13, 2005

Well, I basically cooked all weekend. I made french bread (which was excellent btw), rye bread, which was just ok (I think it was a yeast failure) and this is what I served for dinner last night. Believe me, I thought it was going to be gross, but it was really delicious.

Hot Brie Pasta A La Diane
from "Garlic Galore" compiled by M.H. Cummings

1 lb ripe french brie cut in chunks (i peeled it)
1/2 cup olive oil
1 cup fresh basil cut into strips
4-5 large cloves fresh garlic, mashed (and you really need 4 at least)
4 tomatoes seeded and cubed or whateve tomatoes you want (I used grape cut in half)
salt
fresh pepper
1 lb pasta
freshley grated Parmesan Cheese

Cut cheese into irregular pieces
Combine with next six ingredients in a large bowl and let stand (at least) 2 hours at room temperature
Cook pasta, toss with Brie mix and top with parmesan and FRESH ground black pepper.

YUMMO!

john cleese's lemur documentary was pretty good. i watched it twice recently.

i have access, finally. i think it may even be faster than before, thanks to a new wireless router.

today we saw "good night, and good luck." it was really quite good. love the david straitham anyway--ever since the much-poo-poo'ed "sneakers"

Jen wants you all to know that she can talk again - but she hasn't got internet access to let us know. She's lonely and wants you to call her.

NOTICE: PIANO RECITAL

Well, I'm sorry, it's not much notice, but Madeline will be performing at school on Monday 11/14 sometime around 6. I'll give you the exact time tomorrow.

She will also be appearing with the ESS Honor Choras at Cumming's nursing home on Dec 1 around 10.

Good for you Jen!!! you blogged so much!!!

Anyway, I care about the governor of VA AND NJ VERY MUCH. 2 wins in a row for the D's is always news.

Bridge report:

Bridge was held at the home of Tracey. We only had SIX people which was exTREMEly irritating. Apparently one of our members, who shall remain nameless, has decided she prefers singing to playing bridge. We're all a bit put out about the whole thing. Anyway, despite our lack of players we still had a good time. Several people got slams: Rachael: two little slams, Helen - 1 LS, Gram got a GRAND SLAM IN NO TRUMP which is completely unheard of. Prizes were awarded to Rachael (goose), Lil (low), and Lora (high). Tracey served blonde brownies and chex mix. AVGTWHBA. Next week bridge will be at Suzanne's hosted by Rachael (chocolate bavarian will be served). Please call if you can or cannot attend!!!

how much to i hate that "crumbelievable" commercial for cheese?

i know none of you care about this, but thank BLOG the democrat won the VA gov's race. the republican was super-scary.

Tuesday, November 08, 2005

so last night i was out until after 10 and when i got home i didn't have internet access....

tonight after work i took todd home (a bit of a fall...he isn't driving just yet), and then we went to the little grocery store, trader joe's. you can't really "grocery shop" there, but you can get organic butter for 3 bucks a pound, fresh salsa, dried cranberries, $4 wine that's drinkable, GREAT hummus, your standard baguette, and a good price on anything frozen. i got the aforementioned hummus and butter, some wheat bagels, some plums and avocadoes (mila and i split both as we bought them in packs), some frozen cod fillets (breaded...todd got me hooked on them over the spring), and i think that's it. oh no, i got some butternut squash and corn soup, some tartar sauce, and one asian pear. tonight for dinner i had a bunch of stuff because i just couldn't get full. i am not even going to tell you except that it included a bowl of chicken stew and a bag of microwave popcorn.

my boss asked me how she performed at said conference and i said "candy, you were the prettiest person on the panel"......the others were at least 60, grey, and one was a man. she didn't take it as a "compliment".

this old guy (who i refer to as pa pa) gave candy his resume last night. it was all i could do not to laugh--can you imagine an old grandfatherly type with a PhD editing documents with ME who is just filthy, and Candy, who is just a fruitloop?

my my my we sound like the young republicans club what with our fiscal tightwadedness...i rejected all bonds as well. i mean each one comes up every year, they're always approved, and where's the benefit? i see little.

so the one kinda cool thing about living exactly where i do is that often i see the planes circling dulles when they're in their holding pattern at night. it's kinda pretty to see all the colored lights in a circle--then it sort of feels like an invasion--then i remind myself it's not an invasion and it's pretty again.

tonight i bought my cat chicken flavored rawhide-like dog chews. he seems to enjoy them as he thinks he's a dog and likes to chew.

last night i went to an stc (society of technical communication) panel forum--my boss suckered me into going because she was on the panel. you know, they say that librarians and techies are geeky--what a group of balding, glasses-wearing, chinless overweight, poorly dressed group of anti socials. i mean, they all had plenty to say to each other, in this meeting, but you can tell they are the less nessman's of their respective offices. i mean, don't get me wrong--i'm totally one of them. in fact, today i was jockeying for an office with a better view and a complete absence of foot traffic. i want a raise.

i had SO much i wanted to say--gone, all gone.

last night i made chicken stoup and pumpkin yeast bread--both came out more than impressive.

i can't believe flyi is going through bankruptcy. if my flight home gets canceled i'll be one p.oed puppy.

the financial director was caught checking out my ass this morning. not by me, unfortunately.

What's going on with the blog? Did one of you screw it up? Because I certainly didn't.

Yesterday I made bread and watched Category 7. I must say it was a lot better than Category 6, but then it should be shouldn't it. Even JK watched it and was gratified by all the destruction. I thought they should have explained why George Washington's face fell of Mt. Rushmore though, they didn't do a very good job of that - something about water freezing and thawing I guess. There was also a MAJOR plot flaw in that Randy Quaid was in TRACTION IN THE HOSPITAL in one scene, then he asks the nurse for a hacksaw - SHE BRINGS HIM ONE _ AS IF!! and the next minute he's driving around chasing storms. WHATEVER. Ah well, the only downfall was that it's continued until next Sunday. Hopefully they don't destroy the entire world, because then there'll be no Category 8 will there. Anyway as for the cast, Shanon Doherty was a lot better than Nancy McKEon in cat 6. Swoozie was pretty good, and the two hunky guys are actually hunky.

So after pracctice and scouts we came home, watched the Soup Nazi episode, Survivor and Apprentice. After that I finished "Play Misty for me".

Eastwood's powerful debut and one of the best suspense films of the 70's, 28 May 2002

Author: Mika Pykäläaho (bygis80@hotmail.com) from Järvenpää, Finland

In the early 70's Clint Eastwood was very anxious to direct a movie of his own and the producers gave him the opportunity to do so with one simple condition: he wouldn't be receiving a paycheck from his work. Eastwood accepted this offer eagerly, directed "Play Misty for me" and the rest is, as we all know, movie history. "Play Misty for me" is a modest little thriller but it's more effective than a thousand electric shocks. Plot is rather simple but quite spectacular and Clint had the talent to tell it in a real exciting, stylish, strong, gripping and entertaining way. If someone's claiming that the story could never happen in reality I can only answer that it's impossible for me to agree. I actually used to date a girl who was annoyingly lot like Jessica Walter's Evelyn. More realistic the movie feels like, more powerful the experience obviously is and to me this film was almost frightfully realistic. Acting is superb. Eastwood's delivers a fantastic performance as Dave Garver and Jessica Walter is insanely great. One of the most sympathetic details of "Play Misty for me" is the fact that Clint gave a small supporting role of Murphy the bartender to his dearest friend and mentor Don Siegel.

Siegel himself directed Clint in five movie classics: "Coogan's bluff", "Two mules for sister Sara", "The Beguiled", "Dirty Harry" and "Escape from Alcatraz". In the famous scene Dave Garver and Murphy are playing an absurd game called "Cry Bastion". Clint admitted in the DVD documentary that there's no such game at all - they were just fooling around and improvising the game while playing it and that makes the scene twice as amusing. I adore almost every moment of "Play Misty for me" but unfortunately somewhere in the middle of the film there's couple of totally unnecessary sequences. Other one is like an overromantic music video of a song "First time ever I saw your face" and afterwards there's a scene that makes the movie look more like a jazz festival documentary than a serious thriller and it needlessly breaks the excitement. Without those two scenes I would give "Play Misty for me" 10 out of 10. But now I'll have to settle with "only" 9/10. "Play Misty for me" started Eastwood's directorial career and it still remains to be one of the most powerful motion picture debuts acting director has ever made. It is such a terrific and marvelous suspense film it's almost touching to watch. This movie is an adorable classic and after 21 movies Clint has directed since, "Play Misty for me" has definitely place in the better half.

Rk's review: I think Mike might have a little to close to this movie to review it. Anyway, it WAS pretty good, story wise, but the acting was pretty bad, and Clint used every stereotypical line he could come up with while writing it. Also, he called everyone "man". It was really FULL of cheesy lines, but that's ok, the drama was real. The music was a little to funky and upbeat for a thriller though, it would have fit much better in a roller derby movie. Is Misty really a song? Watch it for yourself if you like cheesy 70's movies.

likely even.

now there's some huge meeting near my office--i must turn on weezer to drown out the deafening sounds of work.

consider me shut.

today i have been working very hard to procrastinate. i'm doing a fair job of it i'd say. i installed the NG screensaver on my laptop so now if you look at it you're lightly to see fighter jets, nuclear subs, missles, etc. i'm cool now.

why is rk worthy of receiving emails and i get nothin? i'm so lonely over here!

Well, too bad I won't be there to join you. The big question though: do you have to work tomorrow night?

Also, just so you know, my cat Taily loved the soup last night.

Adventures in eating

I've found that the best way to get my kids to eat something "gross" is to serve it with something they love. So tonight they ate Julia's "Soupe au pistou" (veggie soup) and noone died of vomiting thank goodness. I served it with homemade bread, that's what got them through the experience. Isaiah seemed to like it though. Maddy, not so much.

cfc continued...

You're lucky you don't live here because you would have been force fed it. Anyway, tonight I'm going to make them pizza to make up for it.

Blog Review:

Halloween Candy:

The GOOD news is I don't like ANY of the candy the kids got - that's also the bady news. It was all prepackaged "fun size" hershey's stuff, and you know I dont like milk chocolate so whatever. Thank goodness halloween lives in Leigh, who was the ONLY person to make a cute homemade treat for the kiddies. You rock leigh! I missed the 'ol molasses popcorn ball, though, I have to say.

food news

I fed my family "Cat food casserole" last night. Reviews as follows.

John "This is awesome"
Maddy "This isn't bad"
Isaiah "I don't like it but i'm done".

I consider those rave reviews, so here is my recipe.

Cat Food Casserole
3/4 lb pasta of your choice (but not anything long like spaghetti)
1 lb frozen peas
1 can cream of mushroom soup (don't use aNYTHING other than REGULAR cream of mushroom soup - not light, not garlic not ANYTHING)
1 can good quality tuna

cook pasta al dente, drain and add 1 tbsp Houlton Farms Butter (if possible) and 1 tbsp olive oil, throw in remaining ingredients and reheat until it's warmed through. Add salt and pepper to taste. Throw in a bowl and enjoy (but don't eat it cold like JK does because that's disgusting)

Bridge Report

Bridge was held at Suzanne's last night. The regulars were all there. The cards were EXTREMLY disappointing for me. Suzanne served corn flake pie and chocolate pie, I had corn flake and it was elegant. I met Suzanne's new neighbors who seemed very nice. Lill won high, Lora, low and i don't know who got goose. Next week bridge is at Tracey's but we don't know what night yet due to the election.

Last night I got the kids decked out (see below) and we went trick or treating. AVVGTWHBA. They got a giant bowl full of loot, came home and went to bed. I watched 2.5 men (my favorite show) and a little football. Be prepared: Category 7 is on Sunday night. You all know how much I loved Cat 6 - so I'm thrilled. It's got an all star cast again, but instead of Nancy McKeon, Shanon Doherty is going to be on this one so it should be a lot better since she was a 90's star instead of an 80's one. Randy Quaid returns though, which is sure to make it special.
