year - who maine voted for - party - notes

1789 - Washington (unchallenged - unaffiliated)
1792 - Washington - (still unchallenged - unaffiliated)
1796 - Adams - Federalist
1800 - Adams - Federalist - The nation went Democratic Republican however, electing TJ
1804 - Jefferson - DR
1808 - Pickney - Federalist (The rest of the nation picked James Madison)
1812 - DeWitt Clinton - Fusion Party (The rest of the nation picked Madison again)
1816 - Rufus King - Federalist party - once again the nation went with someone else - James Monroe
1820 - James Monroe - Democratic Republican
1824 - J. Q. Adams - This was a strange election, all candidates represented different factions of the Democratic Republican party Adams actually lost the popular vote but convinced Henry Clay to give him his electoral votes so he could be Pres.
1828- Maine's vote was actually split some how but I haven't figured it out. Jackson got 1 vote from ME and Adams got 8. (Jackson won the election)

1848 - Lewis Cass - D (The Whig, Zachary Taylor won the election)

1872 - Grant - R
1876 - Hayes - R (lost the popular vote but won the electoral)
1880 - Garfield - R
1884 - James G. Blaine - R - (Grover Cleveland was elected)

1892 - Harrison - R (Cleveland elected again)

1900 - William Mckinley - R

1904 - T Roosevelt - R

1932 - Hoover - R (that oughta scare ya!!!) Mr. Roosevelt won handily of course

1936 - Maine STILL didn’t get it and didn’t vote for FDR again!!!! What a bunch of losers. Roosevelt won every state except Maine and VT!!!!! We wanted Alfred Landon – R. God.

1940 Wilkie - R, ummmm Roosevelt re elected of course

1944 - Dewey - R - Roosevelt wins

1948 - Dewey - R - Truman wins

1952 - Eisenhower - R - well what do you know, as maine goes……

1956 - Ike again - R

1960 - Nixon - R - Kennedy wins

1964 - Johnson -D

1968 - Humphrey - D, Nixon wins

so folks it appears to me that half the time the nation votes the same as maine.
